Maharashtra has strong aspirations to be seen as a global leader working at the intersection of economic growth, urban infrastructure development and environmental action. Towards that end, the Department of Environment and Climate Change, through the Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyan, aims to take strong on-ground climate action across 43 AMRUT cities all of which are signatories of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s Race to Zero campaign.
A key initiative has been the launch of the ‘Accelerating Climate Action in Maharashtra’s 43 Cities’ initiative under the ‘Climate-Forward Maharashtra’ campaign. Through this programme, WRI India is supporting the Department of Environment and Climate Change, in mobilizing the transition to low-carbon and climate-resilient development, through a localised-approach of plans and projects and capacity building.
As part of the capacity-building component, we are rolling out foundational training modules aimed at helping state and city government officials mainstream climate action planning and implementation.
The program is open to Commissioners, Additional Commissioners, Deputy Municipal Commissioners, Chief Engineers, Department Heads, Assistant Commissioners from ULBs; representatives from parastatal agencies for sectors such as Transport, Water Supply, Energy Distribution (MJP, IMD, MSEDCL, GSDA, MPCB, local Transport SPVs); Chief Environment Officers, OSDs from State Development Authority; Nodal officers from various urban schemes (Such as Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyan, Swatch Bharat Abhiyan, NCAP).
While the programme content is in English, trainers will deliver the course in Marathi, Hindi and English. To attend the sessions please register here: https://forms.office.com/r/BJbymx58mj

Select cities - based on willingness and institutional readiness – will be identified to participate in this second module. We will help identify bankable projects of priority, pool them in a project basket and support the development of selected pilot projects, as appropriate.
A feasibility study will be carried out to assess various project development and financing mechanisms like a state-level development fund or the possibility of strengthening the existing project financing facility to fund the bankable projects of priority.
